Judging criteria for the FINALS

Greetings Finalists!

Here are the areas the judging will be based on for the final round of the competition.

  • Vocal Range and Accuracy of Pitch (10marks)
Songs that win contests are not monotone chants. They must vary from low to medium to high notes. The highest notes must be articulated without strain or cracking in the voice. The low notes should also contain power and clarity.
  • Vocal Quality (10marks)
“Texture” of voice. Some singers have a soft and gentle sound. Others deliver the song with gravely and hoarse sound. The style of the song can require either kind of voice. All are excellent in their style.
  • Stage Presence (10marks)
Singers need to communicate non-verbally as well as vocally with the audience. They need to use eye contact, hand movements, and walk around the stage. The stage is the platform where singers physically perform songs. A singer’s use of the space must add to and not distract from the meaning of the words she sings.
  • Subtext (10marks)
Singers need to connect their mind and emotions when telling the story of the song. This personalized ownership of the meaning of the song is the subtext.
  • Audience Response (10marks)
Applause is an obvious form of audience appreciation of the performance. Singing along with the performer during the song is just as convincing. Judges will watch the public during the performance and see if their eyes and ears are connecting with the singer.

Good luck!!

Audition Results

The participants who signed up for Josephian Idol were all very competitive and this made it really tough for the judges to short-list the contestants for the 2nd round of audition.

Contestants short-listed for the 2nd round of audition

Upper Primary Category

  1. Ivan Abisha (6An)
  2. Nigel Koh & Linkesh (6Ga)
  3. Dylan Quek, Ryan Tan (6Mi)
  4. Gabriel Nyew (6Mi), Bryan Tan (6Ga)
  5. Vedantchauhan (6Lu)
  6. Matthew Soh (5Pa)
  7. James Alexander Greaves (4Ra)
Lower Primary Category
  1. Ethan Loke, 2 Anthony
  2. Josh Jordan Gan, 2 Joseph
  3. Luke Xavier Chew, 2 Luke
  4. Erwin Francis, 3 Stephen
  5. Charles Lee, Harrison Galistan, Samuel, Daniel Paul Lee and Ethan, 3 Anthony

We urge all short-listed contestants to work very hard for the 2nd round of audition as the competition will now be tougher compared to the 1st. We would like to highlight to the rest who did not make it through, that the outcome of the 1st audition does not justify whether or not one is a good singer. Do continue to pursue your passion in singing and we hope to see you in the next singing competition!
